University of Benin Benin City Edo State is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria. University of Benin, abbreviated Uniben, is known for its academic excellence.

This university has some of the best lecturers the country has produced and has graduated hundreds of thousands of students since the university was established in 1970.

The main campus of the university is situated along the Lagos Benin expressway in an area called Ugbowo and marks the entrance into Benin City. Another campus mainly for arts related courses is located at the Ekenwan area of Benin City and is fittingly referred to as Ekenwan Campus.

The Ugbowo campus is home to the Faculties of Engineering, sience, social sciences, medicine and several related discipline. It is also home to the school of post graduate studies, the vice-chancelors office and the Vice chancellor's lodge.

The University of Benin has a vibrant student union and student unionism is a recurrent decimal in the school life of students of Uniben.

"Alele Williams says we cannot use the main auditorium. We are there now. Let her come and stop us!"

That was the daring speech of one student union activist to students gathered in the 500 lecture theatre on the occasion of the student union week back in 2000.

Apparently the main auditorium had been scheduled for a different event and the student union couldn't swallow the fact that they would not be allowed to use the main auditorium.

Eventually, the students won.

The student chanted, "Student power, super power".

Talking about Alele Williams.

Grace Alele Williams became the first female Vice Chancelor in Nigeria when in 1985 she was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin. She was a force to recon with.

In 2000/2001 session, there was a dramatic increase in cult activities in Uniben. Cultists were on rampage and inter-cult clashes increased. A 400 level student lost his life during one of those clashes and cult attacks were common.

Grace Alele Williams demonstrated an uncommon will. The end of the 2001 session saw a no-nonsense clamp down on cults and cultists. A good number of students were rusticated. Some others were suspended and yet others were dismissed. In one clean sweep, she restored sanity back to the school. People who had no business being in Uniben were shown the way out.

That action restored the reputation of Uniben.

Uniben is the cradle of learning where ingenious ideas sprout and are nurtured to greatness. Some of Nigeria's great got their greatness from Uniben.

As the comrades in the student union would say, "Great Uniben Students!"

"Gre-a-a-at!"

Uniben holds a promise for millions of students yet to come. The promise of education without tears.
