The Institute of Business Development is a professional body established to enhance the practice of business in Nigeria.
Businesses, both private and public, need business development experts with the relevant training and discipline to practice business ethically and professionally. The institute of business development exist to fill that need.
The objectives of the institute include:
• To provide tuition and examination facilities for qualifications embracing all aspects of the law and practice relating to Business Development and Strategy.
• To provide pre-qualification and continuing professional Education and creating forums for discussions about contemporary and relevant issues.
• To promote research on Business Development, and contribute to and inform debate on public policy.
• To organize lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences.
• To be leader in education and experts in building strategic thinking, capacity development, master business and marketing plans.
• To regularly organize revision classes for students, preparing for the Institute’s examination.
• To publish in-house journals and professional magazines on Business Development Strategy.
• To ensure that members are gainfully employed.

The Institute was registered with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in line with the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 1990 as a Company Limited by Guarantee on 21st of April 2006 with RC. 650980.

The Institute is the Professional Body for Business Development professionals in Nigeria. It is the public face of learned professionals, which represents the interests of its members within Government, the business community and the general public.
Committed to maintaining the quality, integrity and high professional standard of practicing members, the Institute has established a Code of Conduct requiring the development and review of professional Standards.
A disciplinary process has been established to enforce adherence to this Code and Standards. In addition to these controls, the Institute fosters growth within the profession by contributing to the education of aspiring persons and continued development of members.

EXEMPTIONS
The institute is prepared to consider granting exemption in respect of professional qualification or in the case of an examination, which overlaps considerably with one or more of the Institute’s examinations.
An exemption list and application form is available from the Institute. Holders of professional qualifications and degrees not listed are asked to submit a syllabus and allow at least six weeks for its consideration.
If you are applying for exemption in respect of one of the qualifications listed on the exemption list you should submit the appropriate fees at the time of application.
For qualifications not listed it is suggested that only the syllabus be made available initially.
EXAMINATION PERIOD
The examination holds twice a year, May & November.
The entry form is seasonal.
• May Examination entries are made in March.
• November Examination entries are made in September
AIM OF THE EXAMINATION
To provide the professional knowledge, skills & understanding required, to undertake, after sufficient experience, a position as an expert in Business Development.
REGISTRATION
Student Registration: To undertake the ABDI examination it is necessary first to complete Student registration.
Eligibility: The Institute wishes to ensure that those who begin their studies are capable of passing the examinations, for this reason, all applicants must meet requirement A and one of the options in requirement B below:
A. The minimum age for Student Registration is 18 years at the closing date for Student Registration (or such less age as may be agreed by Council).
B. The following alternatives are the minimum educational qualifications for entry to Studentship:
1. GCE/WASC/SSSCE or equivalent with Credit in five subjects. The five credits must include English Language and Mathematics.
2. HND, or B.Sc in any field of study, which is relevant and will be a lead foundation for the purpose of ABDI examinations or
3. The full Qualification of relevant professional bodies subject to Council’s approval.
The following conditions also apply to 1, .2 and 3 above:
In addition Council is prepared to give special consideration to applications for student registration from older students working, who do not meet the minimum educational requirements outlined in paragraph B above. Such applications will be considered in the light of: the applicant’s age, his/her experience and employer’s reference. It is very unlikely that Council will approve any applications under this category from persons with less than five years working experience and who are not at least 21 years of age irrespective of an employer’s recommendation.
GRADUATES CONVERSION COURSE (GCC)
This is a short membership programme for graduates and members of other recognized professional bodies who have acquired experience in the relevant industries.

EXECUTIVE CONVERSION COURSE (ECC)
This is also a short membership programme for executives. Participants are expected to have acquired post graduation experience of not less than 8 years.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Institute is on an individual basis and is open to any individual who wants to take a career in Business Development and Strategy. Members pay an annual subscription each year, and anyone lapsing their membership is not entitled to describe himself or herself as a member or use designatory letters after their names.
There are three grades of membership as follows:
(1) STUDENT: No designatory initials
(2) ASSOCIATE: Has successfully completed the Institute’s examination; Uses the initial ABDI
(3) FELLOW: Has completed a minimum of six years full time experience as Associate. Uses the initial FBDI
Membership admission process is strictly based on passing the Institute’s examinations either through the Institute’s mainstream or the conversion programmes.
QUALIFIED MEMBERS
IBD Membership builds upon the achievement gained from examination success by offering further support through updating opportunities and public recognition of the knowledge and integrity of the holder of the Institute’s Certificate.
Members are highly sought after, as they have not only demonstrated their knowledge through the rigorous exam process, but have also undertaken to act with integrity by signing up to the Institute’s Code of Conduct.
