As I write this many parents who have children with serious learning difficulties are either too ashamed or embarrassed to talk about or they think the child is not ready to learn.

Parents who think their difficult to educate kids are just being stubborn and disinterested in Western education are unlikely to seek professional help in dealing with the problem.

These category of parents are unlikely to engage a special education teacher to cater for the special training needs of the kids in question.

Some may even think the problem is caused by the spirit of their dead ancestors or that someone has placed a cause on the child or on the family. So they may seek solution to the problem by consulting spiritistic mediums.

If you will understand that Nigeria is a third world country in transition, then you will understand why many Nigerian parents still reason that way.

Wait. Who needs a special education teacher?

It's pretty obvious.

Anyone who has difficulty with learning at the pace of a regular class has special learning needs and should be taught by a special education tutor or professional.

There is a variation to this.

For example, if a child has had good grades in a previous school but now has difficulty coping when transferred to another school, this cannot be classified as a special education needs case.

Another good example is a teenager that has passed through high school with relatively good grades but then begin to experience difficulties as an undergraduate. This is also not a special needs case.

In both examples above, the likely cause of the problem may be a curricula change. And this often happens with children who initially attended sub-standard schools and then moved to a more competitive school.

Even if the students in these examples do not need special education teacher, they do need as much support from their parents as possible. And that support could include getting them a private teacher to take them by the hand and lead them through the difficult phase they are in.

This is for parents.

If you do have kids with learning problems and who need special education provided by professional tutors in this area, don't be shy to speak out and get the necessary help. That will do your child a lot of good. It will also help both your child and you, the parents, scale the difficult times with ease.
