Road Safety Nigeria - Help Save A Soul!

road safety nigeria africa

Road safety is serious business. Thousands of lives are lost each year because of the callous attitude of drivers in Nigeria.

These men and women who die needlessly from avoidable road accidents are the fathers and mothers of somebody out there. They are the uncles, aunts, and sons and daughters of some aged parents out there.

This callous waste of human lives is totally unnecessary. And the only way to stop it or at least reduce it to the barest minimum is to take road safety seriously.

What are the common attitudes in Nigeria that often endanger the lives of people and lead to accidents? What attitudes threaten road safety?

The first is driving against traffic or what is commonly called 'one way' driving.

Driving against traffic is by far the biggest cause of road accidents especially in collisions between pedestrians and uncoming vehicles. The reason this is so is that pedestrians expect vehicles to drive the right way. And so when they want to cross the road, they do not bargain for the fact that there will be a vehicle coming from the wrong side of the road. And so, an accident occurs.

The bad news is that accidents caused by vehicles driving against traffic are often very fatal. So, if you are the kind of person who likes driving against traffic, this is the time to stop. Besides being unethical, it is risky. Sooner or later you will have a death on your conscience.

The second attitude is driving at top speed when visibility is poor or during or after rainfall. When it rains, the roads get really slippery. At such times, smart drivers reduce speed because they recognize that the car brakes will be less effective under those conditions.

Another time to reduce your speed is when visibility is poor. Unfortunately, that is when many insane drivers increase speed, perhaps to show off to their wife or female companions that they have good eysight. I have seen several instances when cars were caught underneath packed or broken down trailers because they drove straight into it because they didn't see it.

A third cause of road accidents especially within the city is refusal to obey traffic lights.

Many motorist increase speed when approaching a junction with traffic light especially when the light has turned amber and about to turn red. The reason is because they want to drive past the traffic light quickly before it turns red and stops them. This attitude often result in accident especially if the lights turn red mid way and the folks from the other side of the road get a green.

Dear motorists, when the traffic light turns amber, that is the time to slow down and stop not the time to increase speed to attempt to beat the light.

A fourth reason for road accident is driving beyond specified traffic limits. Many people have it in their heads that 100km per hour is the recommended traffic limit in Nigeria. Please note that this traffic limit is for highways not for densely populated areas. Observe speed limits and make our roads safe.

Road safety is serious business. Your family needs you in one piece, not in pieces.

If you die prematurely, you wife and kids will lose a treasure. And depending on the financial situation in the home, your premature exit could land your beloved family in serious financial crisis. You don't want that to happen to your family, do you?

My advice?

Take responsibility for your own safety.

Yes, agencies like the FRSC are working hard to make our roads safer. And they are doing a great job. But safety is the individual's responsibility. Your safety is your responsibility.

Drive safely and live a full satisfied life. Do not die before your time. Your family and friends need you alive.
