Nairaland Nigeria - Naija Land - The Land of The Largest Black Race

Nairaland - also called Naija land or Naijaland - is a colloquial term used to refer to Nigeria, the black country in West Africa with the most populous black race. The use of the term Nairaland is mainly among Nigerians themselves who see Nigeria as God's own country.

God's own country? What would make a black man see his country as God's own country? Isn't that how Americans refer to their country?

Nigerians have good reasons to refer to their beloved country as God's own country. The major reason being that Nigeria is a country blessed with human and material resources.

Nigeria is one of the largest crude oil exporting countries of the world and, as such, a leading member of OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Besides crude oil, Nigeria boost of other commercially available minerals and thus, the mining industry is growing steadily in Nigeria.

Farming and fishing are major industries in Nigeria . . . the Nairaland.

Why farming?

The reason is simple. Nigeria soil supports agricultural production big time. Major agricultural produce like maize, cassava, palm trees, ground nut, melon, yam, oranges, mangoes, cashew, and paw paw are available in Nigeria. Name it, Nigeria has it.

Oh, less I forget. Sorghum, onions, and tomatoes are major crops from the northern part of Nigeria while Cocoa is resident in the Western part of Nigeria in areas like Ondo state.

When the federal government banned the importation of barley in the 80's, the brewing industry and other companies in the food processing sector scurried to find a replacement. Sorghum came handy as suitable replacement. That switch from barley to Sorghum grew the fortunes of fellow Nigerian farmers in the north as margins grew with the growth in industry demand.

Wait. Why is Nigeria referred to by many Nigerians as Nairaland?

The name derives from the name of Nigeria currency . . . the Naira.

In a similar vein, Nigeria is referred to as Naija or Naijaland.

Nigerians are proud of their legacy. This country - Nigeria - has the largest population of the black race. These people are proud of their heritage as the black diamond of Africa . . . the giant of Africa.

Nigeria's technological growth has not matched its wealth accrued from crude oil revenue. Making the three crude oil refineries in this oil rich country of Africa reasonably functional has been a herculean task. The three refineries each function at less than 60% installed capacity.

Even the agricultural sector, the sector that powered the economy before discovery of crude oil, has not benefited from the immense crude oil revenue that has accrued to the country. Nigeria has been described as the most under-developed of the oil producing economies.

That notwithstanding, Nigeria people have faith. They believe that this is God's own country and that God will soon send credible leaders who will turn things around for good.
