Lagos Security - How Secure Are You?

Lagos security is a major concern for many visitors and tourists to Lagos Nigeria.

This concern is major because foreign media reports about Lagos Nigeria and, indeed, the whole of Nigeria and Africa have not always been fair.

Get this straight.

Security is always an issue with big cities. And it doesn't matter whether it's a developed or a developing country.

Nigeria is a developing country. Lagos Nigeria is a commercial mega city. So, what do you expect?

The same security challenges faced by other major cities of the world, of course.

So, are there security issues in Lagos?

Yes . . . just like any big city of the world.

Is it a chaotic situation?

Certainly not.

I have been living in Lagos since 1997 and I can tell you that I have never been caught in any life threatening situation before.

Oh, I've experienced occasional breakdown of law and order in certain areas like Agege during the crisis for control of motor parks by touts of opposing gangs.

That happens every now and then in volatile areas like Agege and Ajegunle (aka AJ city). But as usual, the police quickly steps in and conditions are again brought under control.

It is worth noting that such upheavals do not happen in rich neighbourhoods like Ikoyi and Victoria Island. I guess you understand why.

Wealthy folks are much too busy and too rich to riot over peanuts.

On the other hand, poor folks in cramped neighbourhoods are under severe pressure to make ends meet. Hence, any unpleasant situation often result in squabbles.

So, should you be afraid of coming to Lagos Nigeria?

You have no reason to be.

However, if you want to be doubly sure or doubly guarantee your security, you can apply for police escort. If you make a case for one, your wishes may be granted.

But generally, Lagos Nigeria is a peaceful city. And Nigerians are hospitable people. They treat strangers pretty well.

You absolutely have nothing to be worried about. You can take my word for it.
