History of Nigeria - Free Nigeria History In Modern Language

History of Nigeria. The facts about Nigeria history.

Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world. The country has a population of about 150 million people who speak about three hundred languages.

Of the about three hundred languages spoken in Nigeria, only three are predominant. They are the Hausa, Ibo, and the Yoruba languages.

The Hausas occupy the northern part of Nigeria, the Yorubas the western part, and the Ibos the eastern part. The Hausas are predominantly farmers and cattle rearers. The Yorubas are also predominantly farmers while the ibos are predominantly businessmen.

Before the colonial era, the different tribes in Nigeria existed as separate villages and towns, each with its own culture and traditions. Moral values were held high. Families were united. And good neighbourliness and community spirit prevailed.

The white man came and established its own culture, religion, and government. Communities that resisted were subjugated. And valued communal treasures like the ancient sculptures of the old Benin kingdom were carted away to foreign lands.

The communities making up modern Nigeria were forcibly merged together in 1914 when the British amalgamated Nigeria. Consequently, the cultures are as diverse as the languages.

Nigeria gained independence from the British on October 1 1960. However, the civilian rule that inherited power from the British was shortlived as the military took over in a military coup in 1966.

Since then, the history of Nigeria has been littered with one coup after another with civilian democratic rule inbetween.

Civilians and politicians often blame the military for the slow development of the economy citing the many years of military rule as the root cause of the lack of modern infrastructure in Nigeria.

However, many of those politicians forget that they have had enough years to impact the economy and the lives of Nigerians positively if they really wanted to. The history of Nigeria is filled with such opportunities for change that politicians threw to the wind.

Nigeria history will not be complete without mentioning that the country is made up of 36 states. Lagos use to be the capital city of Nigeria before it was moved to Abuja in the 1990's.

However, Lagos Nigeria still remains the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. Commercial activity and industrial presence is at its peak in Lagos Nigeria.

Nigeria has come a long way. It is once again a force to recon with in Africa and the world.

Yes, Nigeria history has its own unique twists and challenges. But its people have the heart and the will to deal with them decisively.
