High school Lagos Nigeria - The high school system is pretty popular outside Nigeria.
Let me break down how the educational system works in Nigeria.
A young child starts with elementary school at about 2 years of age. Elementary school in Nigeria consist of . . .
Nursery school 1, 2, & 3A child graduates from nursery 3 to primary 1.
| The primary school system in Nigeria consist of six classes . . . class 1 - 6, spanning six years of school work. Graduate pupils from primary school then migrate into high school or
secondary school.
But before they do, they have to take the secondary school entrance examination. Only students who pass the entrance examinations actually progress into secondary school. |
The Nigerian secondary school system operates the JSS and SSS categorization. JSS means Junior Secondary School while SSS means Senior Secondary School.Junior secondary education has three classes spanning 3 years of education. That is, JSS 1 - 3.
Senior Secondary School education also has three classes spanning 3 years of senior secondary education. This means that secondary education or high school education in Nigeria covers a period of 6 years.
| However, to graduate from JSS 3 to SSS1, students have to take the JSS examinations. Candidates who pass the exams progress to SSS 1. Secondary school students who make it all the way to SSS 3 take two final exams . . . the mock examination and Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). The Mock Examination is an internal examination organized by the high school to evaluate the performance of students over the period of 6 yrs of study in the secondary school. |
The internally organized exams is structured like the final SSCE exams and serves as a good test of students' preparedness for the final exams.
Successful secondary school graduates . . . students who pass with at least five credits at SSCE . . . are left with two hurdles to cross before being ushered into the bliss of University life.
The first is JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) exams called U.M.E (University Matriculation Examination) and then the entrance examinations organized by the student's university of choice.
The above is an overview of the Nigerian education system from the grass root down to entrance into university life.
