Corruption In Nigeria - How To Deal With Corruption In Nigeria

Corruption in Nigeria has been the subject of much discussion. Seminars and workshops have been held on the subject with prominent Nigerians mounting the podium and speaking elegantly of how corruption has destroyed the fabric of our society.

Sad to say, many of those anti-corruption speakers are the corrupt leaders in power.

Just how bad is corrupion in Nigeria?

The humble truth is . . . corruption has become a pandemic. It is killing our society.

Government officials seek bribe to do the job they are paid to do.

Traffic officials collect bribe from traffic offenders and let them go free. Politicians loot the treasury in billions.

The sad part is that these corrupt leaders walk the street . . . sorry, they don't walk the streets. they drive criminally expensive cars on the streets of the country arrogantly flaunting their ill-acquired wealth.

On occassions, these politicians are exposed by journalists as having stolen public funds. But nothing happens to them.

A few years back, one of the state governors of the Niger Delta region was accused of stealing a huge amount of money. The financial crimes agency in Nigeria brought him to court. He was found guilty of the crime and everyone was sure one of the big guys was finally going to pay for his financial crimes.

But that didn't happen. The rule of plea bargaining was applied. He was asked to return part of the money he stole and then allowed to go free because it would supposedly cost the state a lot to prosecute the case to a finish.

On the flip side, a LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) official who was found guilty of collecting bribe was sentenced to four years imprisonment in May 2009.

His offence?

He collected ten thousand Naira bribe from a motorist who broke traffic law and then allowed the motorist go free. The money was not remitted to the state government . . . it went into his pocket.

If a lowly traffic personnel could go to jail for collecting bribe, why can't a 'big boy' who stole billions of Naira be equally sentenced to several years imprisonment for crime against the society?

Corruption in Nigeria will continue to blossom as long as it pays to be corrupt.

Want to stop corruption or at least minimize it to the barest minimum?

Then send corrupt leaders and corrupt businessmen to jail. Let people pay for their crimes. Do to the big shots who are corrupt what was done to the little guy who took bribe.

Corruption ruins a nation. Nigeria is currently under-developed because corruption is on rampage.

Want to grow as a nation?

Deal decisively with corruption.
