Benin City Edo State Nigeria - Ancient City In Need Of Change
Benin city is the capital of Edo state, one of the 36 states of Nigeria. The city is one of the ancient cities of the world known for its
craftmanship. In fact, when the British invaded the old Benin kingdom in 1897, a key reason was the artifacts of Ivory, bronze and iron.
|
Much earlier, the warriors of Benin Kingdom had built the popular Benin moats estimated to measure about 20 X 40ft and surrounding the entire
circumference of Benin. The intimidating moats were built to keep the enemies away and did just so until the British attacked the city with jaw-dropping
military might in 1897 and overthrew the city. Expectedly, much of the treasured Benin artifacts were stolen and now decorate British museums.

The good news is . . . Benin City is no longer that ancient city.
Today the old "Benin Kingdom" is a modern city with all the hustle and bustle of city life. As the pictures on this page show, Benin has indeed
moved forward. [click

The mud houses that characterized the old Benin Kingdom is all gone. They have been replaced with beautiful architecture,
good network of roads, a bustling commercial centre, and all the bells and whistles of city life.
However, the city is not growing as fast as it should.
I spent 19yrs of my life in Benin City, so I know. I know the potentials of these people. I know their commitment to education and creativity.
And I know they have not used their potentials to the full.

There is a huge brain drain in Benin and, indeed, in about the whole of edo state. Many edo speaking people believe they have to go overseas,
especially Europe, to make it in life. And so, they are passionate about traveling overseas . . . whatever it takes.
The passion to travel abroad has eaten so deep that even some parents do not mind sending their young daughters away to Europe for prostitution.
For them, it's all about the money. These parents do not care about the life their young men and women will live in the countries they travel to.
They just want the money, irrespective of how the kids get it.
Many who were unable to travel overseas or who were deported from the countries they travelled to with illegal documents, have become criminals
who terrorize fellow residents of Benin.
I was in Benin sometime early April 2009 and the fear in the city over criminal activities by youngsters was so thick you could slice it
with a knife. Arm robbers raided three different homes in a street in Uselu within the same week. Many homes in Benin City are under lock and key
by 7pm.
Haba! Benin . . . Wake UP!
Your sons and daughters have become dish waters, prostitutes, gigolos, farm workers with meagre pay, and scum of society in the foreign lands
they run to with illegal documents. You're much too intelligent for that. Your young men and women deserve better than that.
Create jobs. Educate your people about the virtues of a "Good
Name", fear of God, and love of your fellow man.
|
Teach your kids about the value of honesty and harwork. Don't accept stolen money from your kids. Abhor drug money. Build a morally upright society.
|
I had my primary, seconday, and tertiary education in Benin. I spent 19yrs of my life living among the Binis. And I can tell you this
for sure: The Benin people are a resilient people.
My advice?
Use this ingenuity and creativity for purposeful work. Re-brand Benin kingdom. Re-build Benin City. Promote Godliness and love of neighbour.
Parents . . . stop throwing your kids to the dogs. And stop promoting prostitution and illegal practices just to make money through your kids. Life is much more than that.
As Jesus said: "A man's life does not result from the things he possesses".
Learn what this means and Benin could become a haven of peace, security, justice, fairplay, and mass investment by foreign investors.
